An in-depth look at the relevance of religious and spiritual issues to alcohol and drug use and abuse throughout the lifespan
Spiritual issues and forgiveness are oft-neglected topics in treatment programs for substance abusers. This unique book brings those underrated components of recovery to the forefront through current research, case studies, and the insight of experts in the field of spirituality as well as drug/alcohol treatment. It illustrates the important interrelationship among religiousness, spirituality, forgiveness, and alcohol and drug use and abuse throughout the lifespan. The contributors examine the effects of religiousness and spirituality on recovery in relation to more widely recognized supports. Each chapter is extensively referenced, and most include tables and/or figures that make difficult information easy to understand and work with.
Spirituality and Religiousness and Alcohol/Other Drug Problems: Treatment and Recovery Perspectives draws clear, important distinctions between religiosity and spirituality. It provides you with a clearly laid out conceptual framework for examining the relationship among spirituality/religiousness and alcohol/drug problems, and a theoretical model of forgiveness in regard to alcohol/drug abuse. This informative book also examines:
- the existing literature on the intersection of spirituality/religiousness and alcohol/drug issues
- addiction recovery across the lifespan
- connections among stress, quality of life, social support, spirituality and religiosity, and recovery
- how social supports, spirituality, religiousness, life meaning, and affiliation with 12-step fellowships affect the quality of life for people in recovery
- evidence-based forgiveness treatment
- alcohol abusers’ traits and how abusers function in the context of family
- Christian perspectives on alcohol/drug use and abusewith a chapter devoted to Protestant perspectives and treatment implications
- predictors of rehospitalization for homeless substance abusers, including spiritual well-being
- various dimensions of religious involvement and mental health outcomes among addicted women
- whether religiousness, as opposed to church attendance, is related to alcohol/drug consumption and delinquency
- the ties between religious variables and mental health in a high-risk population (chemically dependent pregnant or parenting women in a residential treatment program)
- . . . and a great deal more
This book is designed to be immediately useful to practitioners (social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and ministers) who work with substance users and abusers, as well as to academicians and researchers involved with these topics. This informative video shows how a therapist works in treatment partnership with a patient, family, and friends to surmount major obstacles to recovery. The video portrays reenacted therapy sessions using transcripts from actual sessions with a patient—showing how the real process of recovery can begin—and be sustained. Each session with the patient, his family, and friends (all portrayed by actors) is followed by a discussion of salient points with Dr. Galanter. Seasoned with practical advice from Dr. Galanter’s years of experience in the field, the companion booklet provides a concise, indispensable guide to this therapy model.
Network therapy is a multimodal approach to rehabilitation in which specific family members and friends are enlisted to provide ongoing support and promote attitude change. Three critical tasks propel the therapy and are illustrated on the video: maintaining abstinence (the prompt achievement of abstinence with relapse prevention), caring for the network (network members are part of the therapist’s team and not subjects of treatment themselves), and securing future behavior (development of a drug-free adaptation). The network complements individual or group therapy and Alcoholics Anonymous.
For easy reference, this helpful example of network therapy is accompanied by a table of contents with concepts listed by location on the video. Replete with practical insights and methods, this valuable video and companion booklet will benefit mental health care professionals, addiction specialists, and trainees alike.

UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) after taking a long survey on drug addicts has come to a conclusion, “The drug-related problems experienced by many drug users are compounded by the general lack of accurate, practical and realistic information about drugs.” Thus once someone is trapped in the clutches of this irresistible addiction, the guy ends up ruining his life. That’s the ultimate truth; of course a bitter one.
Matter of choice
The drug rehab centers have been specifically designed to support the acute patients affected badly through drug use to come out of this deadly world. If it were a matter of choice then no one would really think of getting admitted to a rehab center before getting addicted to drugs. Thus choice of a drug rehab center is not left to the drug user. Rather it becomes the primary concern of his/her near and dear ones to bring him back to the state of healthy living.
From first use to addiction
How does anyone get addicted? It is definitely not a matter of a single day’s instance. There is a substance called dopamine produced by drugs. The more it is in your body, the more you feel relaxed and good. And as a consequence you want more. Finally you are drawn towards it to a point where you have no control over your desire. Thus you are addicted and you can do anything to get it.
Counseling at rehabs
The rehabs try to change the state of your mind. It works stepwise to understand your problem and make you feel what you are suffering from. The rehab boosts the confidence level of a patient and gives him every type of support required both mentally and physically.
It is not that you can stop using drugs from the very first day you join the rehab. The first thing the doctors and the counselors try to decipher your problem. This takes place through long informal conversation. Then it is accompanied by a question-answer session. The family members and friends are also involved to understand the mental status of the patient. Is it a case of depression? Or is it due to bad company at the tender adolescent period? All these queries are noted and orderly documented.
The rehab center slowly guides the patient to see life with a positive outlook. The dose of drugs is gradually lowered and medicinal support is provided. The patient is made to follow an active schedule with more involvement in different works. And the rest is left on time.
